JB Equity has announced that Stephen Mcloughlin has joined the private equity firm as a new partner. A native of South Africa, Stephen has first-hand management experience from agricultural operations in soft commodity value chains across Sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and Sierra Leone. In his most recent role he ran a management consultancy that facilitated private equity investments into Sub-Saharan Africa, addressing the financing gap of high-growth agricultural enterprises across the region.
Stephen is joined by Thomas Ward, a highly respected senior executive from the global beverage industry, who joins JB Equity’s board of directors as a non-executive director. Thomas was key member of the management team that developed Scottish & Newcastle plc from a small UK regional beer company to one of the world’s largest international brewers, creating substantial value for shareholders in the process (the share price rose 800% from 1984-2008; and the enterprise value grew from £300 million to over £10 billion). Thomas was instrumental in negotiations between S&N and the £10 billion hostile consortium bid by Heineken and Carlsberg in 2008 to acquire S&N, then the largest M&A deal ever in the global beverage industry. The defence won widespread acclaim from investors and commentators.
At JB Equity, Stephen will spearhead JB Equity’s investment strategy for agribusiness in Africa where he will be instrumental in deal sourcing, execution and development of portfolio companies. JB Equity seeks to work with mission-aligned investors with a long-term interest in developing agriculture in Africa. Thomas will be a major contributor, supporting the board and partners with his considerable expertise in corporate development of consumer-driven enterprises.
